The Blackfoot River flows west through the heart of western Montana. It is a beautiful freestone river with excellent hatches and a recovering wild trout fishery. The Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches in June are the marquee events and draw anglers from across the region.
Blackfoot River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The Blackfoot runs through a mix of public and private land from Lincoln down to the Clark Fork confluence near Milltown. The middle sections near Ovando have some of the best fishing and reasonably good access. The river is most popular with float anglers during the Salmonfly hatch.
The Skwala hatch in March and April provides good early-season dry fly fishing before flows rise with snowmelt. Mother's Day Caddis hatches in late April and May are also productive when conditions are right.
June brings the Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches, which are the primary reason most anglers visit the Blackfoot. Summer fishing with PMDs and hoppers is solid through the prime months. Fall October Caddis hatches in September and October offer excellent fishing with fewer anglers.

Check Conditions Near Blackfoot RiverWhat to Fish
The Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches in June are why most anglers target the Blackfoot. The hatches often overlap and can be intense when conditions align. Float the river during the hatch window for the best access. Look for adults clustered on streamside vegetation and fish big dries tight to the banks.
Recommended: #4-6 Stimulator, Golden Stone #6-8
The Skwala hatch on the Blackfoot offers good early-season dry fly fishing before the main crowds arrive. March afternoons produce good hatches when temperatures warm up. Fish the slack-water edges and inside bends where fish can hold and feed without fighting current.
Recommended: #8 Skwala Adult, Chubby Chernobyl
PMDs hatch consistently through summer on the Blackfoot. Morning hatches produce the best surface activity. The river has good populations of wild trout that rise freely during PMD hatches. A well-presented Sparkle Dun or CDC Dun is all that is needed.
Recommended: #16-18 Sparkle Dun, PMD Comparadun
October Caddis hatches are a fall highlight on the Blackfoot. Large orange caddis emerge in September and bring trout to the surface in the evenings. The river sees very light pressure in fall and the fish are more approachable. A size 8 Orange Stimulator fished with some movement works well.
Recommended: #8 Orange Stimulator, October Caddis Adult
