About Clinch River

Norris Dam releases cold water from the bottom of Norris Lake, creating a consistent tailwater environment below the dam. The most productive trout water runs from the dam downstream through Clinton and into Anderson County. Access is available at several points including the TWRA access areas near the dam and in town.

The Clinch is known for excellent midge and BWO fishing throughout the year. Spring and fall BWO hatches bring fish to the surface reliably. Summer trico mornings can be productive. The river also holds healthy populations of fish that respond well to nymph presentations during non-hatch periods.

TVA generation schedules affect fishing conditions on the Clinch. Low generation or no-generation periods create the safest and most productive wade fishing. The Clinch gets good angler pressure but remains a high-quality fishery due to the consistent cold water and diverse insect populations.

What to Fish

Clinch River Key Hatches

Midge

Year-round, peak winter

Chironomidae

Midges are the most consistent producer on the Clinch River throughout the year. Winter midge fishing can be outstanding during low generation periods. Zebra Midges, Disco Midges, and similar patterns in sizes 20-24 are essential.

Recommended: Zebra Midge #20-24

BWO

March through April and September through November

Baetis spp.

BWO hatches on the Clinch are reliable in spring and fall and bring fish up for extended dry fly sessions. Overcast days with stable generation produce the best hatches. Size 18-20 parachutes are the standard pattern.

Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-20

Sulphur

May and June

Ephemerella dorothea

Evening sulphur hatches on the Clinch in May and June produce excellent surface fishing. The hatches are not as legendary as on the South Holston but can be substantial and bring good fish up consistently.

Recommended: Sulphur Parachute #16-18

Trico

July through September

Tricorythodes spp.

Trico spinner falls in summer mornings are a consistent opportunity on the Clinch. Fish feeding on tricos can be extremely selective. Early morning arrival and fine tippet presentation are required for consistent success.

Recommended: Trico Spinner #20-22
