About Connecticut River (NH)

From the Connecticut Lakes down through the North Country, the upper Connecticut offers serious fly fishing in a remote setting. The river is wide and requires good wading gear and attention to flows. The best trout water is typically in the upper reaches where water stays cooler longer.

The river has a more tailwater-like character in the upper reaches due to regulated releases from the Connecticut Lakes dams. This moderates temperatures and extends the season. Midges are effective year-round and can be the only game in town during winter.

Spring sees Hendricksons and BWOs on the wider pools. Summer brings Tricos and Sulphurs on the slower glides. Fall is often the best time to fish the Connecticut with BWOs and Autumn Caddis combining for excellent dry fly opportunities.

What to Fish

Connecticut River (NH) Key Hatches

Hendrickson

Early to mid-May

Ephemerella subvaria

Hendrickson hatches on the upper Connecticut produce some of the best dry fly fishing of the season on this large river. Fishing the emerger in the surface film is often more effective than the dry dun.

Recommended: Hendrickson #14

Trico

July-August mornings

Tricorythodes spp.

Early morning Trico spinner falls on the Connecticut flats require fine tippets and accurate casting to rising trout. This is a technical but rewarding summer opportunity.

Recommended: Trico Spinner #20-22

Blue-Winged Olive

April and October

Baetis spp.

BWOs on the upper Connecticut can produce excellent fishing on cool overcast days in both spring and fall. The larger water means more fish are available but finding risers takes some searching.

Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-20

Midge

November through March

Chironomidae

Winter midge fishing on the regulated upper Connecticut extends the season well past what most freestone rivers offer. Fish gather in deeper slower runs in cold weather.

Recommended: Griffiths Gnat #20-24
