The Gallatin runs through a narrow canyon south of Bozeman before opening onto the valley floor near Manhattan. It is a smaller, faster river than the Madison but equally productive and more accessible for wade fishing. The Green Drake hatch in June and hoppers in August make it worth a dedicated trip.
Gallatin River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The canyon section along US 191 is the most heavily fished stretch. It is technical water with tight casting lanes, but the fish are there and they rise predictably. Lower in the valley the river braids through agricultural land and fishing pressure drops considerably.
The Skwala hatch in March and April is excellent on the Gallatin, often better than on the larger nearby rivers. Mother's Day Caddis hatches in late April and May bring fish up in good numbers before runoff kicks the flows up.
The Green Drake hatch in June is the river's signature dry fly event. Fish size 10-12 paradrakes in slower runs during the evening. The Salmonfly also moves through the canyon in late May. Hoppers are productive throughout August along the canyon walls where grasshoppers drop into the current.

The Green Drake is the Gallatin's most celebrated hatch. It fires in the evenings during June in the slower canyon pools. Fish a large Paradrake or Lawson's Green Drake when the light drops. The hatch can be short but intense and the fish are very active during it.
Recommended: #10-12 Paradrake, Green Drake Comparadun
The Gallatin is one of the best Skwala rivers in Montana. The hatch starts in late March during warm afternoons and continues into April. Fish the slower water on the inside bends and look for fish rising in the softer currents. Good early-season dry fly fishing before the runoff begins.
Recommended: #8-10 Chubby Chernobyl, Skwala Adult
The Mother's Day Caddis hatch in late April and early May produces outstanding surface fishing on the Gallatin. Large numbers of caddis emerge mid-morning through afternoon and fish rise freely. An Elk Hair Caddis or soft hackle fished in the film works well.
Recommended: #14-16 Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis
The canyon walls funnel grasshoppers onto the Gallatin all summer. Fish tight to the banks with large foam flies from July through September. The narrower canyon sections concentrate hoppers and fish hold tight to structure waiting for them to fall in.
Recommended: #10 Parachute Hopper, Chubby Chernobyl
