Logan River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The Logan River flows through Logan Canyon in Cache National Forest northeast of Logan, Utah. US-89 follows the river through the canyon, providing excellent roadside access to miles of public water from the canyon mouth near Logan upstream to Hardware Ranch and beyond. The Logan is a classic cold-water freestone stream with diverse habitat including pocket water, riffles, and deeper pools in the canyon.
Wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout all inhabit the Logan. The canyon section from the Logan City intake upstream through the heart of the canyon holds the best populations of larger fish. Upper sections near the state line and tributary streams hold more cutthroat. Brown trout dominate the lower and mid-canyon, while rainbows are more common upstream. The river is not stocked in the canyon sections.
BWOs arrive in April and return in fall. The caddis hatch from May through August is the most consistent surface event. The Green Drake hatch in June is the Logan River's signature, bringing large fish to the surface for a concentrated window. PMDs overlap with the Green Drake in June and July. A Trico spinner fall in late July and August rounds out the summer. Autumn Caddis in September and October closes the season.
The Logan is a popular destination for Cache Valley residents and draws visitors from the Salt Lake area looking for accessible canyon trout fishing. Weekend pressure can be heavy at the main pullouts along US-89. Fishing on weekdays or moving away from obvious access points produces better results. The upper canyon near Tony Grove Lake and the tributaries offer more solitude and good dry fly fishing for cutthroat.

Drunella grandis
The Green Drake hatch on the Logan River is the most anticipated event of the year. Large Drunella grandis mayflies emerge in June, drawing the biggest fish in the river to the surface. The hatch window is relatively short, usually two to three weeks in the first half of June. Timing matters. A Green Drake Paradrake or Parachute in size 10 to 12 is the right fly. Fish the deeper pools and runs where large trout position during the emergence.
Recommended: Green Drake Paradrake, Parachute Green Drake #10-12
Hydropsyche sp.
Caddis is the consistent workhorse hatch on the Logan from May through August. June evening emergences produce the most reliable surface activity throughout the canyon. An Elk Hair Caddis in size 14 to 16 covers most situations. Caddis overlap with the Green Drake in June for some of the most productive dry fly days of the year on the Logan. Soft hackle wet flies also account for fish throughout the caddis season.
Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis #14-16
Baetis sp.
BWOs bookend the season on the Logan River. April hatches arrive as snow is still possible in Logan Canyon, typically on overcast afternoons when air temps drop. Fall BWO fishing in October coincides with peak aspen color in the canyon and often produces the most consistent dry fly action of the fall season. A Sparkle Dun in size 18 to 22 handles rising fish during both windows.
Recommended: Sparkle Dun, CDC Dun #18-22
