About Manistee River

The Manistee River below Tippy Dam runs cold and clear year-round, creating a tailwater environment that extends the trout season well into fall. The regulated flows keep temperatures in the optimal range for brown trout through summer when most Michigan freestone streams run too warm. The river holds self-sustaining wild browns from Tippy Dam downstream to the town of Manistee.

The Hex hatch is the signature event in late June, but the Manistee's tailwater character makes it productive across a longer season. Midges from November through March, BWOs in April and October, and Tricos through August give trout reasons to look up for most of the year. Caddis hatches run from May through August with peak action in June.

The most accessible sections are near the Tippy Dam recreation area and along Coates Highway. The river is wide and powerful in the lower stretches — wading requires care, especially after dam releases. Check Consumers Energy's flow release schedule at Tippy Dam before planning a trip, as generation schedules affect both wading safety and hatch timing.

What to Fish

Manistee River Key Hatches

Hex

Late June to Early July

Hexagenia limbata

The premier event on the Manistee. Evening and after-dark emergences in late June draw large browns from depth. The tailwater's consistent flows mean the Hex hatch runs on a more predictable schedule here than on freestone rivers.

Recommended: Hex Paradrake, Hex Wiggle Nymph #4-6

Caddis

May through August

Hydropsyche sp.

A long season of reliable caddis activity from late May through August. Evening hatches and egg-laying flights produce steady surface feeding. The Manistee's stable tailwater flows keep caddis populations dense and consistent.

Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis #14-16

Trico

July to September

Tricorythodes sp.

Morning spinner falls from mid-July through September. Trout feed in flat, slow sections on spent Trico spinners in tight, rhythmic rises. Fine tippet and accurate casts required. Best action in the first two hours after dawn.

Recommended: Trico Spinner, Trico Dun #22-24

Mahogany Dun

September to October

Isonychia bicolor

Fall Mahogany Duns bring consistent afternoon hatches through October. Brown trout in pre-spawn condition feed actively on these large, dark mayflies. One of the most productive fall dry fly hatches on any Michigan river.

Recommended: Mahogany Dun, Isonychia Soft Hackle #12-14
