Obed River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The Obed Wild and Scenic River is managed by the National Park Service and protects some of the most dramatic gorge country in the southeastern United States. The river flows through sandstone bluffs and clear pools holding good populations of smallmouth and spotted bass. The gorge is primarily accessed by foot trail.
Smallmouth in the Obed respond well to poppers, streamers, and crayfish patterns. The river has deep pools alternating with rocky shoals and the fish concentrate in the pool tails and along rocky structure. Fishing is best from late spring through summer and again in fall before water temperatures drop.
The Obed requires some physical effort to access the best water. Trails descend into the gorge from several trailheads managed by the NPS. The gorge is steep in places and the fishing rewards anglers who are willing to hike. Canoes and kayaks can be floated in higher water conditions.

Topwater popper fishing is the signature experience on the Obed. Smallmouth and spotted bass both respond aggressively to poppers worked through the pools and along rocky structure. Evening fishing from June through August produces the most explosive strikes.
Recommended: Foam Popper #6-8
Cambarus spp.
Crayfish are the primary food source for Obed smallmouth. A well-presented crayfish imitation crawled along the bottom through the rocky pools is the most reliable technique when fish are not on top. Olive and brown patterns match the local crayfish.
Recommended: Crayfish Pattern #6-8

Streamer fishing is most effective in the shoulder seasons when water temperatures are transitioning. Dark Woolly Buggers stripped or swung through the pools can produce the largest fish of the day especially in early spring when smallmouth are aggressive.
Recommended: Woolly Bugger #6
Various
Large hopper patterns on the surface in summer can draw explosive strikes from Obed smallmouth. The gorge walls and rocky banks drop insects into the river and bass key on them. Cast tight to the bluff walls and undercut ledges.
Recommended: Hopper #10
Common Questions
The Obed River flows through Cumberland County in the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee. The Obed Wild and Scenic River is managed by the National Park Service and is accessible from Wartburg. Trailheads at Nemo Bridge and elsewhere access the gorge sections.
No. The Obed River is too warm for trout. It is primarily a warm-water fishery with excellent smallmouth and spotted bass. Some sections have rock bass and other panfish. For trout in Tennessee, look to the tailwaters and Smokies streams.
Yes. The Obed can be floated by experienced kayakers during higher water. Floating opens up gorge sections that are difficult to reach on foot. Low water conditions make some sections too shallow to float but wading access to the pools is often better when flows are lower.
