Month-by-month hatch timing, fly pattern recommendations, and current conditions for the Pecos River in 2026. The Pecos flows through a scenic Sangre de Cristo canyon holding wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout with consistent hatches from April through October.
Pecos River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The Pecos River rises in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains east of Santa Fe and flows south through a narrow canyon before entering the plains. The upper Pecos Canyon below Cowles and through the Pecos Wilderness holds the best wild trout water, with public access along NM-63 for much of the fishable canyon. The river is a classic high-mountain freestone stream with cold, clear water, cobble substrate, and good cover in undercut banks and log jams.
Wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout are present in the canyon. The Pecos has fewer stocked fish than some northern New Mexico streams, and the wild fish are generally in good condition. Canyon sections away from the campgrounds and popular picnic areas hold larger fish. Access above Cowles into the wilderness requires hiking and rewards effort with less pressure.
Spring hatches begin with BWOs in April once snowmelt subsides. Caddis activity runs from May through August, with June seeing the most consistent evening emergences. PMDs are also active in June and early July on the cleaner canyon sections. A Trico hatch in July and August brings selective fish to the surface in the smoother pools. Fall brings another BWO window in September and October alongside the Autumn Caddis.
The Pecos is a popular destination for Santa Fe and Albuquerque anglers looking for accessible mountain water. Weekend pressure can be significant near the main campgrounds. Weekday fishing in the quieter canyon sections offers a more solitary experience. The wilderness sections above Cowles require a short hike but fish well throughout the season with less pressure than the roadside water.

Baetis sp.
BWOs open and close the season on the Pecos. April hatches arrive once spring snowmelt clears, often on overcast afternoons in the canyon. Fall BWO fishing in October coincides with peak fall color in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A Sparkle Dun in size 18 to 22 is the right fly for rising fish during both windows. These are the most reliable dry fly hatches on the Pecos.
Recommended: Sparkle Dun, CDC Dun #18-22
Hydropsyche sp.
Caddis is the workhorse hatch on the Pecos from May through August. June evening emergences draw fish to the surface throughout the canyon. An Elk Hair Caddis in size 14 to 16 covers most situations. Soft hackle wet flies in the swing account for fish transitioning from nymph to adult. The caddis overlaps with PMDs in June for the most productive surface fishing of the year on this stream.
Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis #14-16
Tricorythodes sp.
Trico spinners fall in the mornings on the Pecos from July through September, with August seeing the densest activity. Fish key on spinner falls in the smoother pools and flats in the canyon. Small patterns in size 22 to 24 and light tippet are required. Trico fishing on the Pecos is best in the early morning before heat sets in, and the spinner falls typically finish by midmorning.
Recommended: Trico Spinner, Parachute Trico #22-24
Common Questions
The best trout water on the Pecos is in the upper canyon below Cowles, accessible via NM-63 northeast of Pecos. The river holds wild trout from Cowles downstream through the canyon. Access above Cowles into the Pecos Wilderness requires hiking but offers the most remote fishing. Sections near the main campgrounds receive the most pressure on weekends.
Yes. The upper Pecos Canyon holds wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout that reproduce naturally. The Pecos Wilderness sections above Cowles are particularly good for wild fish in good condition. NMDGF stocks some sections near the campgrounds, but the canyon sections away from the road hold mostly wild fish.
Late May through June is the most productive window once spring runoff clears. The combination of caddis and PMD hatches in June offers the best surface fishing of the year. Fall is also excellent, with BWO hatches in September and October bringing fish up on overcast days. August mornings are worth targeting for Trico spinner falls in the smoother pools.
