About Saco River

The upper Saco above North Conway runs through a broad valley with easy wading and good hatches. Wild brook trout and some stocked browns are the primary targets. The river is popular with visitors to the White Mountains and can get busy on summer weekends.

Spring hatches are the main event. Quill Gordons and Hendricksons arrive in late April and May respectively. The March Brown hatch follows and overlaps with Green Drakes in late June. These hatches bring fish up in the larger pools that hold the best trout.

The Saco warms significantly in summer on the lower stretches. Focus on the upper river near Crawford Notch and the headwaters for cooler conditions. Fall BWOs and Autumn Caddis provide consistent dry fly fishing into October.
