About Spring Creek

Spring Creek rises from limestone springs near State College in Centre County and flows to Bald Eagle Creek. Like Penn's Creek to the south, it is fed by stable groundwater that keeps temperatures in the upper 40s through winter and the mid-60s at peak summer.

The stream is designated Class A wild trout water. Wild brown trout populate most of its length. The limestone environment produces dense, predictable hatches earlier in the season than nearby freestone streams.

Hendricksons in April are the first major hatch. Green Drakes arrive in late May, followed by a reliable Sulphur hatch through July. Tricos in August require technical presentations on fine tippet in the flat, clear sections near State College.

What to Fish

Spring Creek Key Hatches

Hendrickson

Mid to Late April

Ephemerella subvaria

The first meaningful hatch of spring. Afternoon emergence on sunny April days. Spring Creek's limestone temps put this hatch 1 to 2 weeks ahead of freestone streams in the same region. Good numbers of fish rise in the afternoon window.

Recommended: Comparadun, Parachute Adams #12-14

Green Drake

Late May to Early June

Ephemera guttulata

Dense dusk hatches of large creamy duns. Spring Creek has a solid Green Drake hatch, though less famous than Penn's Creek nearby. Timing tracks closely with Penn's Creek and is consistent year to year.

Recommended: Coffin Fly, Comparadun Drake #8-10

Sulphur

May through July

Ephemerella dorothea

Evening hatches from May into July. Fires around 7pm in the tail-outs and slow glides. Dense enough on limestone water that fish get selective. Fine tippet and a good drift are required.

Recommended: Sparkle Dun #16-18

Trico

July through September

Tricorythodes sp.

Morning spinner falls on flat water from July through September. The clear limestone sections make Trico fishing technically demanding. 6X tippet, slow approaches, and patience.

Recommended: Trico Spinner #22-26
