The Whitewater River in Winona County runs cold and clear through the limestone bluffs of southeastern Minnesota. It is one of the best spring creek trout streams in the upper Midwest, with consistent Sulphur and Trico hatches from May through August.
Whitewater River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The Whitewater River drains the limestone karst of Winona County before joining the Mississippi near Winona. Cold springs feed the main stem year-round and keep water temperatures in the trout zone through summer. The Middle Branch and South Branch add flow above the confluence, and both hold good fish.
Wild brown trout are distributed throughout the main stem. Native brook trout inhabit the upper tributaries and spring-fed headwaters. The Minnesota DNR designates catch-and-release sections in the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area. These sections see steady pressure from Twin Cities anglers but hold plenty of fish in the less-traveled water above Elba.
Sulphur hatches in late May and June are the peak of the dry fly season. Trico spinner falls in July and August bring fish up on the flat pools through the morning hours. Blue-Winged Olives hatch on overcast days in spring and fall. Light Cahills appear in June evenings and can produce good surface activity when the Sulphurs are fading.

Ephemerella dorothea
Sulphur hatches on the Whitewater are the season highlight. Evening hatches from late May through June bring consistent rise activity across the flat pools and spring seeps. Fish these in the last hour of light with fine tippet and a parachute pattern.
Recommended: Sulphur Parachute #16-18
Tricorythodes spp.
Trico spinner falls on the Whitewater happen early morning in July and August. The flat pools hold fish feeding steadily in the surface film. Use long tippets and small patterns on calm mornings before the wind picks up.
Recommended: Trico Spinner #22-24
Baetis spp.
Spring and fall BWO hatches come off best on overcast, drizzly days. April hatches in the afternoon and October hatches around midday produce consistent rises from fish holding in the runs and seams.
Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-22
Ephemerella subvaria
Hendricksons open the dry fly season on the Whitewater in late April. Afternoon hatches on warm days bring fish to the surface after a long winter. Timing tracks closely with other southeastern Minnesota limestone streams.
Recommended: Hendrickson Comparadun #12-14
