About Beaver River

The Beaver River drains the Tushar Mountains in Beaver County in southwest Utah, flowing west through the town of Beaver before turning south toward Minersville Reservoir. The best fly fishing is in the canyon and mountain sections above the town of Beaver, where cold water and good habitat support wild trout populations. UT-153 follows the upper river through Beaver Canyon in Fishlake National Forest, providing good roadside access.

Wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout all inhabit the Beaver River. Cutthroat are most common in the upper canyon and tributary streams near the higher elevations. Brown and rainbow trout predominate in the lower canyon. The river is not heavily stocked in the canyon sections, supporting a mostly wild fishery. Fish average in the 8 to 14-inch range with larger brown trout present in the deeper pools.

BWO hatches arrive in April and return in fall. Caddis is the main surface event from May through August, peaking in June. PMDs are active in June and July. A Trico spinner fall in July and August brings fish to the surface in the smoother sections. The Autumn Caddis in September and October closes out the hatch season and often produces the most aggressive dry fly fishing of the year.

The Beaver River canyon is a popular summer recreation destination for local residents and Wasatch Front visitors, but fishing pressure on the trout water is moderate compared to many Utah rivers. The canyon sections above Beaver Canyon Campground see less traffic than the lower accessible stretches. The river is best fished on weekdays in summer or in the shoulder seasons when recreational pressure drops.

What to Fish

Beaver River Key Hatches

Caddis

May through August, peak June

Hydropsyche sp.

Caddis is the workhorse hatch on the Beaver River from May through August. June evenings produce the densest emergences in the canyon. An Elk Hair Caddis in size 14 to 16 covers most situations. The Beaver's canyon sections provide good dry fly water with riffles, pool tails, and pocket water where fish rise to caddis throughout the evening. Overlapping with PMDs in June makes this the best month of the year for surface fishing.

Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis #14-16

PMD

June and July

Ephemerella infrequens

PMDs are active on the Beaver River in June and July, with both months seeing peak activity. Afternoon and early evening emergences draw fish up in the pool tails and smoother runs. A Comparadun or Sparkle Dun in size 16 to 18 handles most PMD situations. The overlap with caddis in June makes this the most productive dry fly period of the year on the Beaver.

Recommended: PMD Comparadun, Sparkle Dun #16-18

Blue-Winged Olive

April and October

Baetis sp.

BWOs frame the season on the Beaver River. April hatches arrive as snow is still possible in the Tushar Mountains, typically on overcast afternoons. Fall BWO fishing in October coincides with aspen color in Beaver Canyon and often produces the best dry fly action of the fall season. A Sparkle Dun in size 18 to 22 handles rising fish during both BWO windows on this stream.

Recommended: Sparkle Dun, CDC Dun #18-22

Common Questions

Beaver River Fly Fishing FAQ

Where is the Beaver River trout water in Utah?

The best fly fishing on the Beaver River is in Beaver Canyon, accessible via UT-153 east of Beaver. The canyon sections through Fishlake National Forest hold wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout with good public access along the road. Upper sections near the Elk Meadows ski resort hold more cutthroat at elevation. A Utah fishing license is required.

Does the Beaver River have wild trout?

Yes. The canyon sections of the Beaver River above Beaver hold wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout that reproduce naturally. Cutthroat are most prevalent in the upper canyon and tributary streams. Brown and rainbow trout are common in the mid-canyon sections. The river supports a good wild fishery for a southwest Utah stream.

When is the best time to fish the Beaver River?

June and July are the most productive months on the Beaver, when caddis and PMD hatches overlap for consistent dry fly action. April BWO hatches open the season well. Fall from September through October offers BWO and Autumn Caddis fishing with less pressure. The canyon is a popular summer recreation area, so weekday fishing in June and July avoids the most crowded conditions.
