Betsie River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The Betsie River flows 45 miles from its headwaters in Wexford County through Benzie County before emptying into Betsie Lake near Frankfort on Lake Michigan. The upper river is a classic Michigan freestone stream with wild brown trout, while the lower river below Grass Lake Road Dam sees spring and fall runs of steelhead and salmon. The dam removal at Grass Lake Road, completed in 2016, restored fish passage to miles of additional spawning habitat.
The Betsie's trout season centers on the same hatch calendar as other northern Lower Peninsula streams, with Hendricksons in May, Caddis and Hex in June, Sulphurs and Tricos through the summer, and Isonychia (Slate Drakes) in fall. The river is smaller and less well-known than the nearby Pere Marquette, which means better solitude and less competition during prime hatches.
Good access points include the Homestead Dam site, Thompsonville, and the Betsie River Pathway trailhead in Benzonia. The middle river between Thompsonville and Elberta Road holds the most consistent wild trout numbers. The river is wade-fishable throughout most of its length — carry a wading staff in the lower stretches where the bottom can be slippery.

Check Conditions Near Betsie RiverWhat to Fish
Hexagenia limbata
The Betsie's Hex hatch runs in the slower pools and deep meanders of the middle river. Less pressure than the PM or Au Sable means you can often fish the hatch without competing for water. Fish after 10 PM in the deeper, slower sections.
Recommended: Hex Paradrake #4-6
Ephemerella invaria / dorothea
Sulphur hatches from late June through August provide reliable dry fly fishing through the summer. Evening emergences in the flat sections below Thompsonville. A consistent hatch on a river where summer pressure is lower than most comparable Michigan streams.
Recommended: Sparkle Dun, Sulphur Comparadun #16-18
Tricorythodes sp.
Morning Trico spinner falls from mid-July through September. The Betsie's slower middle stretches hold trout that rise consistently to spent spinners. Fish early, use fine tippet, and watch the water carefully before wading in to avoid spooking feeding fish.
Recommended: Trico Spinner #22-24
Isonychia bicolor
Reliable fall hatches through October with trout in peak pre-spawn condition. The Betsie sees a fraction of the fall pressure of more famous rivers nearby. Isonychia afternoons on this river in October can be exceptionally good fishing with very few other anglers around.
Recommended: Mahogany Dun, Isonychia Comparadun #12-14
