The Big Hole runs through wide, remote valleys in southwestern Montana and is one of the last rivers in the lower 48 to hold a self-sustaining population of Arctic Grayling. The Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches in June are the premier events, drawing anglers from across the country to this uncrowded and productive river.
Big Hole River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
Access to the Big Hole requires some driving, but the effort is rewarded. The upper river near Wisdom has smaller fish and solitude. The middle section from Divide to Melrose is the most popular and holds the largest trout. Floaters have the advantage here as much of the water is private.
Runoff from the mountains keeps flows high into late May and June. The Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches often happen simultaneously on the Big Hole, creating a brief window of exceptional fishing. Time the trip for when flows are dropping and water temperatures are climbing.
Summer fishing is reliable with PMDs in the mornings, hoppers along the banks, and Trico spinner falls on the flat sections. The Big Hole sees less pressure than the Madison or Yellowstone and the fish tend to be less selective as a result.

The Big Hole often has Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches overlapping in June, which creates exceptional dry fly fishing. The hatch window is short so plan carefully. Watch for adults on streamside vegetation and fish large attractors tight to the banks.
Recommended: #4-6 Stimulator, Golden Stone #6-8
PMDs are reliable throughout summer on the Big Hole. Morning hatches produce good rises in the flatter stretches. Fish a well-tied Sparkle Dun or CDC Dun and focus on fish holding in consistent feeding lanes.
Recommended: #16-18 Sparkle Dun, PMD Comparadun
The Big Hole valley has excellent hopper fishing from July through September. The river runs through agricultural land with good grasshopper populations. Fish the banks from a drift boat or wade carefully along undercut banks where large browns hold.
Recommended: #10 Parachute Hopper, Fat Albert
Spring and fall BWO hatches on the Big Hole are reliable during overcast, cool days. Fall hatches in September and October are excellent with very light pressure. Fish a size 20 Comparadun or CDC emerger during afternoon hatches.
Recommended: #18-20 Comparadun, RS2
