About Bitterroot River

The river from Darby downstream to Hamilton and Stevensville fishes well most of the season. The upper river runs faster and clearer, while the lower sections near Missoula slow and deepen. Both hold good numbers of browns and rainbows along with some native westslope cutthroat.

The Skwala hatch starts in late February on warm afternoons and peaks in March. This is one of the best early-season hatches in Montana and draws knowledgeable anglers before the main crowds arrive. Mother's Day Caddis follows in April and May.

The Salmonfly hatch in late May is the most anticipated event. Flows can be high during runoff so check conditions before the trip. Summer hopper fishing from July through September is low-key and productive, with good fish along the banks throughout the valley.

What to Fish

Bitterroot River Key Hatches

Skwala Stonefly

Late February to April

The Bitterroot is one of the best Skwala rivers in the state. The hatch starts in late February and peaks in March, often the first significant dry fly fishing of the year in Montana. Fish the warmest hours of the day and target the slower current along the banks.

Recommended: #8 Skwala Adult, Chubby Chernobyl

Salmonfly

Late May to June

The Salmonfly hatch on the Bitterroot follows runoff. Check flows before the trip. When conditions are right, the hatch produces aggressive surface feeding. Adults clump on willows and alders along the banks. Look for these concentrations to find where the hatch is happening.

Recommended: #4-6 Stimulator, Chernobyl Ant

Mother's Day Caddis

April to May

The Mother's Day Caddis hatch on the Bitterroot is a reliable April event. Dense hatches of small caddis bring fish up throughout the afternoon. Fish a size 16 Elk Hair Caddis or swing a soft hackle through the riffles for consistent action.

Recommended: #14-16 Elk Hair Caddis, Soft Hackle

Hopper

July to September

The Bitterroot valley has solid hopper fishing from July through September. The river runs through farmland with good insect populations. Cast foam patterns to the undercut banks on warm afternoons and expect takes from fish that have been waiting all season.

Recommended: #10 Parachute Hopper, BC Hopper
