About Boardman River

The Boardman River flows 25 miles through Grand Traverse County before emptying into Boardman Lake near Traverse City. The river underwent a major dam removal project between 2012 and 2022, restoring 8 miles of river and reconnecting spawning habitat. The restored sections have rebounded strongly, with improving wild brown trout populations throughout the main stem.

The Boardman's proximity to Traverse City means more angler traffic than remote northern Michigan streams, but the river is long enough to spread pressure out. Hendricksons arrive in May, Caddis and Hex in June, Sulphurs through July, Hoppers in August, and Isonychia (Slate Drakes) in fall. The river fishes well all season with patient, careful wading.

The Brown Bridge Natural Area and Scheck's Place Campground both offer excellent access points with parking and wading trails. The restored lower river between Forks and Union Street Dam is now accessible for the first time in decades and holds recovering populations of wild trout. The upper river above Brown Bridge is narrower and more intimate, with better brook trout fishing.

What to Fish

Boardman River Key Hatches

Hex

Late June to Early July

Hexagenia limbata

After-dark Hex emergences in late June in the slower pools and meanders of the lower river. The dam removal has expanded productive Hex habitat downstream. Fish the Forks section or below Brown Bridge during peak emergence for the best access.

Recommended: Hex Paradrake #4-6

Hendrickson

Late April to May

Ephemerella subvaria

The Boardman's Hendrickson hatch is reliable and consistent. Afternoon emergences start once water temps reach the mid-40s and are heaviest at 50 to 55°F. Fish the classic pools in the Brown Bridge Natural Area for the best Hendrickson water.

Recommended: Hendrickson Dry, Comparadun #14

Sulphur

June to July

Ephemerella dorothea

Evening Sulphur hatches from mid-June through July. Trout rise consistently in the flat, clear sections. The Boardman's Sulphur hatch is one of the more underrated events on a northern Michigan river.

Recommended: Sparkle Dun, Parachute Sulphur #16-18

Isonychia (Slate Drake)

September to October

Isonychia bicolor

Afternoon and evening hatches through fall. Brown trout in pre-spawn condition are aggressive during this hatch. The Boardman is less crowded in fall than early season, making this a productive and low-pressure time to fish near Traverse City.

Recommended: Slate Drake, Mahogany Dun #12-14
