About Davidson River

The Davidson flows through Transylvania County and has sections managed as a Catch and Release water where large browns and rainbows see considerable pressure. The hatchery-supported sections below Avery Creek attract casual visitors while the C&R water draws more serious anglers.

Spring is the prime season on the Davidson. Little Yellow Sallies start in March and overlap with March Browns in May. Caddis and Light Cahills carry through June. Trico hatches in summer mornings are consistent on the slower flats, and the fish can be quite picky.

The Davidson is easily accessible from Brevard and sees heavy foot traffic on summer weekends. Early mornings and weekdays are much quieter. The upper reaches in the forest see less pressure and often fish better.

What to Fish

Davidson River Key Hatches

Little Yellow Sally

March through June

Isoperla spp.

Little Yellow Sallies are the most important spring hatch on the Davidson. These small stoneflies bring fish up from late March and stay important through May. Size 14-16 yellow patterns work best.

Recommended: Little Yellow Sally #14-16

March Brown

May

Maccaffertium vicarium

March Browns in May produce some of the most reliable dry fly fishing on the Davidson. The larger flies are easy to see and fish respond aggressively on overcast afternoons.

Recommended: March Brown Parachute #12-14

Trico

July through September

Tricorythodes spp.

Morning trico spinner falls on the Davidson flats can produce selective feeding from large resident fish. This is technical fishing that rewards patience and careful presentation.

Recommended: Trico Spinner #20-22

Autumn Sedge

September and October

Neophylax spp.

Autumn sedge hatches on the Davidson extend good dry fly fishing into fall. The larger orange-bodied adults hatch in afternoon warmth and draw surface feeding from both browns and rainbows.

Recommended: Orange Sedge #14
