About Green River

The Green River tailwater below Flaming Gorge Dam spans about 35 miles through Red Canyon and into the flats. The cold consistent water temperatures allow fish to feed year-round and produce large well-conditioned trout. Midges and BWOs carry the fishing through the winter months.

Caddis hatches in June produce great evening surface action. PMD hatches in July are excellent and trico spinner falls in August add another dimension to the summer dry fly fishing. The mahogany dun hatch in September is an underrated fall event that brings fish up selectively.

Access is through Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area on the Utah-Wyoming border. The river is popular but the length of fishable water spreads pressure out. Both wading and floating are common approaches.
