About Kennebago River

The Kennebago River flows from Kennebago Lake through Franklin County before joining the Rangeley Lakes chain. It runs through spruce-fir forest and carries cold, clear water for most of the season. Access is limited and fishing pressure is light relative to most New England rivers.

Wild brook trout populate the river from its headwaters to the mouth. Landlocked salmon move in from the Rangeley chain, particularly in the lower sections. The fishery is self-sustaining and managed for quality. Fish are wild and average larger than on more accessible streams.

Hatch timing runs about two weeks later than southern New England rivers. Green Drakes arrive in early to mid-June. Caddis are reliable from late May through August. Isonychia in September brings the largest trout to the surface for the last good dry fly fishing before season end.

What to Fish

Kennebago River Key Hatches

Green Drake

Early to Mid-June

Ephemera guttulata

The Kennebago's prime surface event. Large creamy duns emerge at dusk when water temps climb into the mid-50s. Brook trout and landlocked salmon feed hard during the window. Timing runs about two weeks behind Pennsylvania rivers.

Recommended: Coffin Fly, Comparadun Drake #8-10

Caddis

May through August

Brachycentrus sp.

Caddis carry most of the dry fly season on the Kennebago from late May into August. Evening hatches are reliable and the brook trout respond well. A size 16 Elk Hair Caddis covers most situations. These wild fish take a well-presented fly without hesitation.

Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis #14-18

Isonychia

September to October

Isonychia sp.

Isonychia in September brings the biggest brook trout to the surface before the season ends. Large slate duns emerge in fast riffles in the afternoon. This is often the best dry fly fishing of the fall on the Kennebago and a good reason to book a late season trip.

Recommended: Parachute Iso, Comparadun #10-12

Blue-Winged Olive

April and October

Baetis sp.

BWOs provide the first and last reliable dry fly fishing of the season. Spring olives appear on overcast April days after ice-out. Fall olives return in October and can produce good fishing on mild, cloudy days. A size 20 Sparkle Dun handles both hatches.

Recommended: Sparkle Dun, Parachute Adams #18-22
