About Loyalsock Creek

Loyalsock Creek drains 64 miles through north-central Pennsylvania, cutting through the ridges of the Wyoming State Forest in Sullivan and Lycoming counties before meeting the West Branch Susquehanna near Loyalsockville. It is a freestone stream fed by snowmelt and rainfall. Hatch timing runs one to two weeks later than limestone creeks like Penn's Creek.

The stream holds self-sustaining wild brown trout throughout its main stem and is designated Class A wild trout water by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Native brook trout populate the upper tributaries and headwater reaches. The PA Fish and Boat Commission does not stock Class A sections, so every fish you encounter is wild.

World's End State Park in Sullivan County puts anglers right on productive water with easy parking and camping access. Additional access comes through state forest roads in the Wyoming State Forest. The gorge below World's End holds good numbers of fish and gets less pressure than the park water.

May and early June are the peak weeks. Green Drakes, March Browns, Hendricksons, and Sulphurs all overlap in a relatively short window. Because Loyalsock is a freestone stream, high spring runoff can delay the Green Drake hatch by a week or more. When the water drops and clears, the fishing can be exceptional. October brings Autumn Caddis and the last good dry fly fishing of the year.

What to Fish

Loyalsock Creek Key Hatches

Green Drake

Late May to Early June

Ephemera guttulata

Loyalsock's marquee event. Dense evening hatches of large creamy duns when the stream clears after spring runoff. Big browns come up to feed. Best at dusk when water temps reach 55 to 62 degrees. Timing runs 1 to 2 weeks behind Penn's Creek.

Recommended: Coffin Fly, Comparadun Drake #8-10

Hendrickson

Mid to Late April

Ephemerella subvaria

First significant dry fly action of spring. Afternoon hatches on warm days. Timing runs 1 to 2 weeks behind limestone creeks. Loyalsock tracks air temps, not stable groundwater, so watch for warm afternoons in mid-April.

Recommended: Comparadun, Parachute Adams #12-14

Sulphur

June to July

Ephemerella dorothea

Evening hatches from June into July. Fish active at dusk in long riffles and flat pools. Fine tippet helps on flat water. 5X minimum, 6X on educated fish in slow water.

Recommended: Parachute Adams, Sparkle Dun #16-18

Autumn Caddis

October

Neophylax sp.

Large orange caddis on warm October afternoons. Brown trout in peak fall condition. October on Loyalsock means solitude. Most anglers have put the rods away for the season by then.

Recommended: October Caddis #14

Common Questions

Loyalsock Creek Fly Fishing FAQ

When does the Green Drake hatch on Loyalsock Creek?

Late May through early June, typically 1 to 2 weeks after Penn's Creek. Loyalsock is a freestone stream, so hatch timing tracks air temps rather than stable groundwater. High water years from spring snowmelt can push the hatch into the first week of June.

Is Loyalsock Creek a wild trout stream?

Yes. Loyalsock is designated a Class A wild trout stream in Pennsylvania. The main stem holds self-sustaining wild brown trout. Native brook trout populate the upper tributaries. The PA Fish and Boat Commission does not stock Class A sections.

What is the best access to Loyalsock Creek?

World's End State Park in Sullivan County is the main access point for visiting anglers. The park sits along a prime stretch of the stream with parking and camping. Additional access exists through state forest roads in the Wyoming State Forest.

How does Loyalsock Creek compare to Penn's Creek for fly fishing?

Penn's Creek has denser, more predictable hatches and heavier fishing pressure. Loyalsock runs the same mayfly species but timing is later and more condition-dependent. On the right evening in late May, Loyalsock can fish as well as Penn's Creek with far fewer anglers around.
