About Mecan River

The Mecan is a classic central Wisconsin spring stream. Cold groundwater keeps it fishable in summer when other area streams warm. The Hendrickson hatch in April marks the start of dry fly season and the Hex in June is a highlight.

Caddis hatches dominate summer evenings and trico spinner falls bring fish to the surface in the morning through late summer. Isonychia add action in September on the larger pools.

Access is available through the Mecan Springs State Natural Area and adjacent public lands. The river runs clear over sand and gravel, so a careful wading approach helps avoid putting fish down.

What to Fish

Mecan River Key Hatches

Hexagenia

June

Hexagenia limbata

The Hex is the biggest hatch on the Mecan. Large fish move to the surface after dark and the spinner fall following the emergence can be just as productive as the hatch itself.

Recommended: Hex Parachute #6-8

Sulphur

June

Ephemerella dorothea

Sulphurs hatch on warm evenings in June. The spring-creek fish on the Mecan can be selective, so matching the size and profile of the emerger matters.

Recommended: Sulphur Parachute #16-18

Trico

July through September

Tricorythodes spp.

Morning trico spinner falls are a reliable summer event. Find a pool with rising fish and work them with a size 20 or 22 spinner on a long fine leader.

Recommended: Trico Spinner #20-22

Blue-Winged Olive

April and October

Baetis spp.

BWOs are consistent on overcast days in spring and fall. October can be very productive, especially after the first cold fronts push through.

Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-22
