Nissitissit River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
Brook trout in the Nissitissit are typically small but wild and bright. The river flows through wooded terrain and requires patience to navigate. Terrestrial fishing with beetles and ants works well in summer when hatches are limited.
The hatch calendar here is compressed compared to larger rivers. BWOs and Quill Gordons appear in late April. Hendricksons follow in early May. Light Cahills carry into June. By midsummer the main hatch activity fades and attractor patterns or terrestrials take over.
Fall is often overlooked on the Nissitissit but Autumn Caddis and BWOs bring brookies to the surface in September and October before the season closes. Evening fishing can be particularly good during this period.

Check Conditions Near Nissitissit RiverWhat to Fish
Epeorus pleuralis
One of the first reliable hatches on the Nissitissit. Afternoon emergence on days with water temps in the high 40s gets brook trout feeding actively on the surface.
Recommended: Quill Gordon #14
Ephemerella subvaria
The Hendrickson hatch on small streams like the Nissitissit can produce surprisingly aggressive rises from wild brookies that are used to chasing smaller food.
Recommended: Hendrickson #14
Baetis spp.
Spring and fall BWO hatches are the most reliable surface opportunity on the Nissitissit. Cloudy, slightly rainy days see the best activity.
Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-20
Neophylax spp.
Fall caddis provide late-season excitement on the Nissitissit. Brook trout feed actively before winter and the larger fly size makes for easier fishing than small midges.
Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis #14
Common Questions
Yes. The upper reaches hold a self-sustaining population of wild brook trout. These fish are typically smaller than stocked fish but are in excellent condition and fight hard for their size.
Access points are limited and the river runs through a mix of private land and conservation areas. Research access before you go and respect posted boundaries. The stream is small enough that short walks from road crossings reach good water.
A 7.5 to 8 foot rod in 3 or 4 weight works well on tight brushy water. Short casts are the norm. Roll casting and reach casts help avoid back-cast snags. Light tippet in 5x or 6x is standard.
