About North Mills River

The North Mills River drains the Blue Ridge escarpment in Henderson County before joining the Mills River and eventually the French Broad. The national forest section provides good habitat with cold clear water and decent fish populations.

Little Yellow Sallies and caddis are the primary spring and early summer hatches. The North Mills does not get the heavy pressure that the Davidson receives and the fish can be more cooperative. Spring afternoons with overcast skies produce the best hatch activity.

The North Mills Recreation Area near the campground provides easy access with good parking. The trail upstream from the campground leads to quality water that receives less pressure. The stream is best waded in lower water conditions during spring and fall.

What to Fish

North Mills River Key Hatches

Little Yellow Sally

April through June

Isoperla spp.

Little Yellow Sallies are the highlight hatch on the North Mills River. They begin in April and peak in May. Afternoon hatches on the riffles and runs produce the best dry fly activity of the spring season.

Recommended: Little Yellow Sally #14-16

Caddis Green Sedge

April through July

Rhyacophila spp.

Green sedge caddis provide the most consistent hatch activity on the North Mills from spring into summer. Evening hatches are reliable and fish respond well to a size 14 Elk Hair Caddis.

Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis #14-16

Blue-Winged Olive

April and October

Baetis spp.

BWOs on the North Mills are reliable in spring and fall. The fall hatch in October can be good when cool temperatures and overcast skies coincide in the afternoon.

Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-22

Autumn Sedge

September and October

Neophylax spp.

Autumn sedge hatches in October round out the season on the North Mills River. Fish that have been tight-lipped through summer often become more surface-oriented when these larger caddis adults appear.

Recommended: Orange Sedge #14
