About Pohopoco Creek

Pohopoco Creek drains the Blue Mountain ridges of Carbon County, flowing to the Lehigh River near Lehighton. It is a freestone stream with good populations of wild brown trout in the upper reaches and native brook trout in the headwaters.

The Pocono area location keeps the stream cooler than lowland PA streams, which extends the fishing season. Spring hatches arrive later than the limestone creeks. High water from spring snowmelt can delay the Green Drake by a week or more.

Hendricksons in April kick off the season. Green Drakes follow in late May. Light Cahill hatches in June are strong and often overlooked. Autumn Caddis in October provides the last consistent dry fly fishing of the year on a stream that sees relatively little pressure.

What to Fish

Pohopoco Creek Key Hatches

Green Drake

Late May to Early June

Ephemera guttulata

Evening hatches of large creamy duns when spring runoff clears. Pohopoco runs this hatch a week or two behind Penn's Creek. The Blue Mountain setting means high water years can push the hatch into early June.

Recommended: Coffin Fly, Comparadun Drake #8-10

Hendrickson

Mid to Late April

Ephemerella subvaria

First dry fly action of spring. Afternoon emergence on warm April days. A freestone stream, so timing is weather-dependent and can shift by a week depending on spring temperatures.

Recommended: Comparadun, Parachute Adams #12-14

Light Cahill

June to July

Stenacron interpunctatum

A consistent June hatch worth targeting. Evening emergence in riffles and tail-outs. Overlaps with Sulphurs in early June. Pohopoco sees less pressure than nearby Lehigh Valley streams during this hatch.

Recommended: Light Cahill #12-14

Autumn Caddis

October

Neophylax sp.

Large orange caddis on warm October afternoons. Brown trout in peak fall condition in a setting that sees minimal fishing pressure by mid-autumn.

Recommended: October Caddis #14
