About Temperance River

The Temperance River flows through Temperance River State Park in Cook County. The lower river is famous for its deep basalt potholes and gorge carved by glacial meltwater. Waterfall barriers limit steelhead access to the lower river. Above the falls, cold headwater tributaries hold native brook trout through the summer season.

Spring steelhead from Lake Superior enter the Temperance from late April through May. The lower river below the falls holds the steelhead. Brook trout fishing above the barrier improves through June as the spring runoff subsides. The upper Temperance and its tributaries in the Superior National Forest are excellent small stream brook trout habitat with minimal pressure.

Caddis and stonefly hatches drive the surface fishing in late May and June. Terrestrial patterns work through July and August in the upper reaches. The river is smaller than some nearby North Shore rivers but the gorge scenery and wild setting make it a memorable destination.

What to Fish

Temperance River Key Hatches

Caddis

May through July

Trichoptera

Caddis hatches drive the surface season on the Temperance. Evening hatches in June in the pools above the gorge produce rise activity from brook trout. An Elk Hair Caddis or X-Caddis covers most situations on this fast freestone water.

Recommended: Elk Hair Caddis #14-16

Stonefly

May

Plecoptera

Stonefly hatches overlap with the spring steelhead run in May. In the brook trout water above the barrier falls, Yellow Sallies and stimulators produce good surface action through riffles and pocket water during peak runoff.

Recommended: Yellow Sally #14, Stimulator #12

Terrestrials

July and August

Various

Terrestrial patterns keep the surface fishing alive through summer in the upper Temperance. Brook trout in the headwaters are opportunistic and respond well to foam hoppers and ants fished along the banks and through pocket water.

Recommended: Hopper #10-12, Ant #16

Autumn Caddis

October

Neophylax spp.

Autumn caddis in October bring brook trout to the surface for the last dry fly fishing of the year. These larger orange-bodied caddis hatch on warm afternoons and can produce memorable fishing in the upper pools.

Recommended: Orange Sedge #14
