Truckee River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
The most productive California sections of the Truckee are the stretches around Truckee itself and the canyon sections below town toward Hirschdale. Access is good along most of the river corridor. The Truckee is a freestone river with clear water, good structure, and a mix of wild trout.
Golden Stoneflies in late May and June get the season going. Caddis are the dominant summer hatch and evening rises from June through August can be excellent. PMDs fire in the mornings during summer. Fall brings BWO hatches that extend good dry fly fishing through October.
The Truckee sees significant pressure on weekends. Midweek fishing is more productive and allows better access to productive water. The canyon sections below Truckee toward the Nevada line hold larger fish and receive fewer anglers.

Check Conditions Near Truckee RiverWhat to Fish
Caddis are the most reliable hatch on the Truckee all summer. Evening rises from June through August bring trout up across the riffles and in the slower pools. A size 14 or 16 Elk Hair Caddis in tan or olive covers most situations. Swing a soft hackle just below the surface during the hatch for additional takes.
Recommended: #14-16 Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis
PMDs hatch mid-morning on summer days. Fish the slower runs and pools where trout set up feeding stations. A Comparadun or Sparkle Dun matches the natural well. The Truckee fish see significant pressure, so lighter tippet and accurate presentations matter.
Recommended: #16-18 Comparadun, Sparkle Dun
BWO hatches in spring and fall extend the dry fly season significantly. The best fall BWO fishing on the Truckee often comes in late October when other hatches have faded and fish are feeding heavily before winter.
Recommended: #18-22 Sparkle Dun, Parachute Adams
