About Tulpehocken Creek

Tulpehocken Creek is a tailwater fed by cold release from Blue Marsh Lake in Berks County. Consistent cold water year-round from reservoir discharge makes it one of the better winter fly fishing options in Pennsylvania.

Wild brown and rainbow trout inhabit the limestone-enriched water. The stream fishes well on midges from November through March, then transitions to Sulphurs in May and Tricos in summer. BWOs fish reliably on overcast days throughout the season.

The tailwater character means hatches are less dramatic than limestone spring creeks, but consistent. The stream sees moderate pressure near Reading but has long stretches of quality water with room to spread out.

What to Fish

Tulpehocken Creek Key Hatches

Midge

Year-Round (Peak Winter)

Chironomidae

The Tulpehocken fishes midges year-round. Tailwater temps stay cold enough for consistent midge activity even in January. Nymphing small patterns under an indicator or Czech nymphing are the standard approaches.

Recommended: Zebra Midge, WD-40 #22-26

Blue-Winged Olive

Spring and Fall

Baetis sp.

Two seasonal windows: late March through May and again September through November. Best on overcast, drizzly days when no other hatches are working. Tailwater conditions make BWOs more reliable here than on freestone streams.

Recommended: Sparkle Dun #18-22

Sulphur

May through July

Ephemerella dorothea

Evening hatches from May into July. Consistent but not as dense as on limestone spring creeks. Fish active at dusk in slower sections below riffles.

Recommended: Parachute Adams #16-18

Trico

July through September

Tricorythodes sp.

Morning spinner falls in summer. Over by 9am on most days. Trout sip tiny spinners in flat, clear sections. Requires fine tippet and careful presentations.

Recommended: Trico Spinner #22-26
