Watauga River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
Wilbur Dam releases cold water from Watauga Lake and creates ideal tailwater conditions below the dam. The productive trout section runs downstream through Elizabethton before temperatures eventually rise. Access is available at the TWRA access area near the dam and at several points in the Elizabethton area.
The Watauga is known for small fly fishing. Midges, BWOs, and small sulphur patterns dominate the hatch cycle. Fish in this river tend to be selective and reward anglers who fish fine tippet and match the hatch carefully. Large brown trout are present and are occasionally caught by patient anglers.
Generation schedules from TVA affect the Watauga just as they do other southeastern tailwaters. Low generation periods are best for wading. The river is smaller than the South Holston or Clinch and requires careful wading to avoid disturbing fish in the clear water.

Chironomidae
Midges are the constant on the Watauga tailwater. Winter midge fishing during low generation is some of the best available in the region. Zebra Midges and Mercury Midges in 20-24 on fine tippet are the standard approach.
Recommended: Zebra Midge #20-24
Baetis spp.
BWO hatches on the Watauga in April and October can bring selective fish to the surface. The clear water and selective fish make these hatches challenging. Fishing a size 20 over a visible riser is some of the most technical angling on the river.
Recommended: BWO Parachute #18-20
Ephemerella dorothea
Evening sulphur hatches in May and June on the Watauga produce reliable surface activity. The hatches are not as dense as on the South Holston but bring fish up consistently on warm evenings.
Recommended: Sulphur Parachute #16-18
Tricorythodes spp.
Summer trico spinner falls in the morning create challenging feeding activity on the Watauga. Fish locked into trico feeding lanes are difficult to fool but responding to a correctly presented spinner is satisfying.
Recommended: Trico Spinner #20-22
Common Questions
The Watauga River flows through Carter County in northeastern Tennessee. The best trout water is below Wilbur Dam near Hampton and Elizabethton. The river eventually joins the Holston River near Kingsport.
Both are northeastern Tennessee tailwaters with excellent trout fishing. The South Holston is larger and more famous for its sulphur hatches. The Watauga is smaller and gets less pressure, making it a good alternative when the South Holston is crowded.
Midge patterns in 20-24 are the year-round staple. Sulphur parachutes in 16-18 cover May and June evenings. BWO patterns in 18-20 work spring and fall. Trico spinners in 20-22 are needed for summer mornings. Fine tippet of 6X or 7X is usually required.
