West River Hatch Calendar — Quick Reference
Ball Mountain Dam controls flows on the West River and the Army Corps of Engineers periodically releases water for recreational use. During dam releases, the river transforms into excellent whitewater and the fishing improves significantly with big flows moving fish. The Jamaica State Park section holds the most accessible trout water.
The upper West River above Jamaica is freestone water that holds brown trout and some brook trout. This section is smaller and wilder than the lower river. Access is available from Jamaica State Park and along several forest roads in the headwaters region.
Hatches on the West River mirror other Vermont freestone rivers. Hendricksons and caddis dominate spring and early summer. Terrestrials carry summer fishing. The river is a good choice for southern Vermont anglers looking for quality trout water within easy reach of Brattleboro and the surrounding area.

Hendricksons hatch in late April on the West River, earlier than streams at higher elevations. The Jamaica State Park section near the dam pool is a good place to look for rising fish during the afternoon hatch window.

Caddis are the primary summer hatch on the West River. Evening hatches in June are the most reliable. The riffles and runs in the Jamaica section produce the most consistent rise activity.

Terrestrials are the main summer producer when hatches slow. The meadow sections near Jamaica have good banks for hopper fishing. Ant and beetle patterns work well closer to wooded areas.

Fall BWOs on the West River can be excellent during overcast October afternoons. Fish that have been under low summer flows become more active as temperatures drop and can be caught on small olives through November in mild years.
