About the Laramie

The Laramie River is best known for trout, with browns and rainbows in its upper water. It also has good carp fishing in its lower stretches.

As the river leaves the mountains and crosses the plains toward the North Platte, it slows down and warms up in summer. Carp feed in the slow backwaters, flats and weedy edges with little current, and that makes for good sight fishing.

Wyoming Game and Fish rates parts of the river as Red Ribbon water, its second-highest class.

Tips for fishing the Laramie

  • Pick your species by the water

Fish the faster, colder water for trout. Look for slow, weedy backwaters and flats down low if you want carp.

  • Sight fish the flats

Carp in the lower river feed in shallow water with little current. Walk slowly and look for tailing fish before you cast.

  • Go in summer for carp

The lower river warms up in summer, and that is when carp move into the shallows to feed.

  • Use the map

With 39 mapped access points over a long river, the app is the easiest way to find water that matches what you want to fish.
